Canon Asia Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Message

Canon’s corporate philosophy is kyosei, which means ‘to live and work together for the common good’. This is what Canon does every day with its corporate activities. We understand that our business is supported by the development of society as a whole. This is why, as a Good Corporate Citizen, Canon aims to contribute to the realization of a better society by engaging in sound and fair business activities. In addition, we realize that we have an increasingly important role to play in addressing complex social issues that include climate change, frequent natural disasters, poverty and inequality as expressed in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations.

Canon’s sales companies in Asia abide by the basic CSR statement of the Canon Group. In addition, we draw on Group resources such as advanced technological capabilities, global business deployment expertise, and diverse, specialized human resources to engage in activities tailored to characteristics and issues specific to the Asian countries and regions we operate in. Besides reinvesting business profits into local communities, we are also committed to addressing social issues, as we believe such activities are essential to sustainable development. Canon Asia’s social contribution activities are focused on education, community care, environment, and cultural improvement. In times of need, we provide humanitarian support to people facing harsh conditions and natural disasters. Under the umbrella message “Imaging for Good”, we aim to do our part in creating a better and sustainable society with fair chances for all, creating and capturing smiles wherever we go.

Team work in contributing to a sustainable environment

A total of 2,000 trees were planted in Taman Tasik Shah Alam to help green the city. The effort was a collaboration between Canon group of companies (Canon Marketing Malaysia, Canon MailCom Malaysia and Canon Opto Malaysia) under the "One Canon One Tree" Programme and Shah Alam City Council (MBSA). The "One Canon One Tree" is an initiative aimed at reducing carbon footprint, raising awareness and cultivating a sense of responsibility in conserving the environment within the community and to achieve a garden city for the community. The event was graced by Yg. Bhg. Dato' Haji Haris Bin Kasim, the Mayor of Shah Alam where Canon presented a cheque for RM25,000 to MBSA to further show its support with its green initiatives. The event was attended by 300 participants including employees and families of the Canon group of companies.

Malaysia's National Day falls on 31st August and in the spirit of nationalism and camaraderie, 150 Canon Marketing Malaysia staff and their families stepped up to do their bit to protect and preserve one of the nation's most treasured wildlife conservation sites, that is Zoo Negara (National Zoo). Canon Marketing Malaysia's show of support came essentially in response to recent media highlights on the plea for corporations and individuals to come forward in aid of Zoo Negara's struggles in preserving the nation's wildlife tourist site. The National Zoo has been needing more visitors and help to cover its operational cost and expansion in recent times.

Led by Canon Marketing Malaysia President & CEO, Mr. Andrew Koh , partcipants joined in the "Green", "Glow" and "Wildlife Enrichment" activities. "Green" preservation activities saw the cleaning and washing of the Javen Deer and Wallaby enclosure in helping to improve the animals' well-being, while "Glow" activities involved painting the Ape Centre as well as other different areas at Zoo Negara for a much-needed facelift. On the other hand, the "Wildlife Enrichment" activity provided valuable experience for all especially children who got cloaser look into the diet, care and habits of the animals and the importance of conservation and creating a sustainabe ecosystem for future generation.

An Educational Trip to Kidzania For Children From Low-income Communities

In collaboration with Taylor's Community, Taylor's Education Group's CSR arm, Canon Marketing Malaysia brought 30 children from the low income community to Kidzania. The project was aimed at exposing underprivileged children to more opportunities, instil confidence and self-motivation, build good character as well as gain important soft skills to help them get ahead in life. Results from the impact measurement study done by Taylor's Community showed that 94% of the children gained new ambitions on that day, through role-play of different occupations.

National Camera Day Celebration

In conjunction with National Camera Day on 29th June, Canon Marketing Malaysia made it possible for children from orphanages to gain photography skills and capture precious moments through the lens of Canon cameras. 38 children from Rumah Hope, Shelter Home and Rumah Amal Telaga Kasih were thought the fundamental of photography by Canon (Malaysia) EOS Youth Ambassadors. Armed with a unit of the mirrorless camera each, their skills were put to the test as they ventured around the grounds of Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC), capturing elements of nature and portrait. They were then assigned to print their photos using a variety of Canon printers and frame them up. Using their creativity, the children decorated the photo frames and teams with the top 3 most creative and inspiring photos took home prizes.

Canon takes pride in not only spreading the love of photography to everyone but also made storyteling easier for people from all walks of life regardless of their background.

Canon Seeding Fund

Financial aid under the ‘Canon Seeding Fund’ has been awarded to three deserving and outstanding students from KDU University College. This fund was established by Canon Marketing Malaysia with the purpose of providing students an equal opportunity for education.

The ‘Canon Seeding Fund’ is part of the 5- year Academic Initiative Partnership between Canon Marketing Malaysia and KDU University College which was established in 2016. Canon Marketing Malaysia has always been passionate about connecting students as they form the leaders of tomorrow and as such has made this partnership its flagship corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative under the pillar of education.

The partnership sees Canon Marketing Malaysia equipping the KDU campus with the latest copiers, large format printers, consumer printers, and cameras. In addition, a specially desinged demo station allows students to experience Canon's latest wireless printing technology to elevate their learning experience.

Contribution to Food Aid Foundation

Canon Marketing Malaysia’s Canon Basics team organized a donation drive among staffs for Food Aid Foundation Malaysia. The donation drive is part of the ‘Love Community Project' which aims to collect non-perishable Halal food. Food Aid Foundation is a non-profit food bank that provides basic food supply to the needy. It works closely with the Department of Social Welfare to identify individuals and organizations that require help. Non-perishable Halal food is one of the category of food being collected by this organization, on top of cooked and uncooked food. Food items which are in greatest demand were collected from Canon Marketing Malaysia’s staff and subsequently donated to the foundation. These contributions were checked and sorted at Food Aid Foundation's facility before being distributed to selected charitable organizations and homes.

Blood Donation

Canon Marketing has been organising annual Blood Donation Drives as part of its corporate social responsibility initiative since 2014. Organised in collaboration with the National Blood Centre this donation drive is aimed at raising awareness on the benefits of blood donation and increasing the national blood supply required for emergency medical conditions, blood diseases and post-childbirth blood loss, among others.

Raising Environmental Awareness During Earth Day

Canon Marketing Malaysia together with Canon Opto Malaysia supported the Selangor Earth Day Celebration organized by the Department of Environment Malaysia. With the objective of raising environmental awareness among students, talks regarding plastic pollution, issues with Municipal Solid Waste as well as methods to reduce, reuse and recycle were conducted during the event. Students from secondary schools in Selangor came together to take part in environmental activities which included tree planting, environmental related quiz, e-waste recycling competition, choral speaking and sketch.
